Managing Invasives to Promote Native Diversity
ALL
WHO ARE INTERESTED IN INVASIVE PLANT ISSUES ARE INVITED to this
symposium (8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) at the University of Connecticut,
Storrs.
The
symposium celebrates the wonderful native plants, animals, and ecosystems
of Connecticut, describes threats posed by invasive species, and
provides tools for managing invasive plants. All interested people,
including municipal staff (inland wetlands/conservation commissions,
parks and recreation, public works), nursery, tree and landscape
professionals, educators, gardening enthusiasts, state and federal
employees, and members of conservation organizations are encouraged
to attend.
The
Keynote Address, "A Case for Native Plants," will be given
by Doug Tallamy, Professor and Chair of the University of
Delaware Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology, and author
of Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife
in Our Gardens.
Additional
morning presentations will highlight new invasive plants, legislative
updates, and weed management areas. Throughout the day a poster
session and other educational exhibits will be featured.

CONTINUING
EDUCATION: Pesticide
Recertification Credits and a variety of other continuing education
credits for forest practitioners, arborists, and landscape architects
will be offered (see website).
REGISTRATION
includes parking and sustainable food: $40 if postmarked by September
10; Students $25 – bring ID late registration $55 (postmarked by
September 24)
The
first 200 people to register will receive free invasive plant
publications from the Federal Highway Administration and the USDA
Forest Service.
This
symposium is funded in part by the CT Department of Environmental
Protection.
